For PVE, if you're not comfortable either or, I suggest a combo. My boon monk is also half prot, and it serves him well. I barely ever lose due to low mana:

Attributes: 14 Healing <+3, 1 armor, 2 from a rune>
8-9 Prot, Rest divine favor

1> Orison Of Healing
2> Shielding Hands
3> Healing breeze
4> Shield of Regeneration <Elite>
5> Healing Seed/Mend Condition
6> Heal Party
7> Divine Boon
8> Rebirth

Although that is a build, it pertains to your OP: This is how I effectively run my PVE Monk

First, Cast boon, then heal as needed. Rebirth is for those tricky rezzes when they die inside a mob's aggro range. Heal as needed.

I've only ever once went off of Heal/Prot, to pure heal, and without some things that prot offers, it's kind of hard unless the group specifies elsewise.

Take this as you will. This also works down in FoW/UW, but It's more aimed towards regular PVE and missions, and having fun.

my personal opinion is, that you need only protection in underworld.

You see, that -2 doesn't work like they want you to believe. You know it's sposed to stack ontop of the cost of the spell, but after the spell resolves, it takes that -2. So hence, it doesn't make everything cost 2 more, it tags it on as an added cost, and by the time you rifle off the spell, that -2 is nothing. Now, what's dangerous though, you only have 3 pips of regen while running boon, so conservation is a big key. But it's highly workable.

So in example for boon:

I cast orison. 5 mana. Casts the spell. Then the -2 hits me. It doesn't matter if you cast a spell at 6 mana, say orison, takes 5, drops you to 1, and the -2 doesn't even really factor in. By the time the -2 delay comes, I've never had boon broken from loss of mana, only shatterers.

Its basicly personal preference.

Do you like to heal damage that has already been done to your team

or

Do you like to protect your team from damage they would take

i like to protect. More fun to me

While I agree it's personal preference, why not mix the two incase of "They've already taken damage, so I'll heal that, and then prevent the next that will happen to them" Much more fun to me this way ^_^

It's a post-count thing. I've just posted alot, and thus, have a high rank.

It's nothing to be concerned about. You'll get there in time

Any other questions, I love to help, contact me via PM

My PvE monk is a boon healer, which works incredibly well if you manage your energy well, which is easier to do than most people make it sound like.

Rule #1: Take nothing but 5 energy spells (except for maybe Healing Seed, depending on the sitution).

Rule #2: Take nothing but 5 energy spells (except for maybe Healing Seed, depending on the sitution).

You get the idea.

I run a boon monk with a 10 and 15 spell listing alike, and have no trouble. With a +8 and a +9 Shield and Breeze, respectivelly, it's hard to fail ^_^ I just boon it up for mend condition and orison

For PvE it's definitely protection/healer monk. More of a protector but with healing spells.
I prefer to have the following protection spells: Reversal of Fortune, Protective Spirit, Mend Ailment, Aegis, Shield of Regeneration, Rebirth.
And then some healing, like Dwayna's Kiss and Healing Breeze. So that's about it. These are 8 skills I use even if people ask for a pure healer (don't ever tell a monk how to keep everyone alive ).

Some areas depends on the creatures and some areas are good with a one of each monk. However in most areas I use a combo of the 2. I rarely run low on energy because I pick low cost spells.

1. Rebirth
2. Healing Breeze
3. Word of Healing
4. Healing Seed
5. Dwayna's kiss
6. Mend Ailment
7. Protective Spirit or Reversal of Fortune
8. Heal Party or Heal area (if minion necro in group)

If I go more protection I add Aegis, and both from #7, Shield of Regen, Shielding hands. Then I add Blessed Aura. This and the Yakslapper gives me 50% longer enchantments. So I get 15 sec on Aegis, shielding hands, Healing seed, and shield of regen...~30sec on protective spirit and 12 sec on reversal of fortune.

My monk is also usually a heal/protection hybrid in PvE.

14 Healing
12 Prot
11 Divine

(think I have that right)

Remove Hex or Inspired Hex (I'm a Mo/Me)
Aegis
Word of Healing
Signet of Devotion
Healing Breeze
Mend Ailment
Changeup slot = Reversal of Fortune usually, occasionally Vig Spirit
Rebirth

Usually no energy problems; tattoo armor and Yakslapper (+15 e).

If anyone has energy issues, change the secondary to necro, and use offering of blood. I never have energy issues, but similar boon builds listed as above.

To OP -- it depends on the area, as prot monks tend to rely on enchants a lot more than healing monks, so if there are lots of enchant stripping monsters around, healing may be more effective than prot. Otherwise, I'd say there isn't much difference in the effectiveness of the skills, only the effectiveness of the players using them. Probably the best thing you can do as a PvE monk is try to coordinate with the rest of your party, especially if there is a second (or third) monk in your group. Other than coordination with other monks, as long as you have some healing, a hex remover, and a condition remover, you'll do OK in PvE regardless of whether you're primarily a protector or a healer.

I concur. Healing >Protection in most areas due to enchantment stripping.

The problem is that Protection monks do not work effectively when there are multiple mesmers. The enchantments get stripped, lingering curse is used and then you cannot put any more enchantments, etc.

Healing usually works provided you have the energy, which is why I like healing more. Protection monks usually have to depend on divine boon for healing.

for PvE i say 2 heals and 1 prot. But for pvp i highly recommend 2 prot (no bond) and 1 heal. My guild just got back into pvp and we are currently 8-1 with 5 flawless victorys, all thanks to the monks.
